Groutable vinyl tile takes a premixed sanded acrylic grout made for vinyl, normally the one sold by the tile's own maker, and never cement grout. Armstrong (Alterna), Mannington (Adura) and Congoleum (DuraCeramic) each name a single acrylic grout and rule out cement in writing. Mannington and Congoleum also rule out epoxy, and Congoleum rules out other brands' premixed grout.
Key takeaways
- Use the grout your tile's installation guide names. None of the three tile makers lists a third-party alternative.
- Cement grout is prohibited by all three. Epoxy is prohibited by Mannington and Congoleum. Furan is prohibited by Mannington. Congoleum also prohibits "other premix grouts."
- Space the tiles 1/16 to 1/4 inch (Mannington's current grout page says 1/16 to 3/16 inch). The finished line comes out about 1/16 inch wider than the spacer because the grout covers part of the rounded tile edge.
- Grout the same day or the next, after re-rolling the floor with a 100 lb roller. Expect 24 hours before light foot traffic and 48 to 72 hours before normal traffic or heavy loads.
- Only products whose instructions describe a grouted method can be grouted, and all of them are glued down.
The short answer, and why forum advice says otherwise
Forum answers still suggest ordinary sanded cement grout, because groutable vinyl looks like ceramic and is laid with spacers like ceramic. That advice is wrong for every system we checked, and the guides are blunt. Armstrong: "Traditional cement Grouts can NOT be used." Mannington: "Never use cement-based, epoxy or furan grout." Congoleum: "Do not use cement, epoxy or other premix grouts."
What all of them require instead is a premixed grout with an acrylic binder and sand filler, which cures by drying rather than cement hydration.
Bottom line: buy the grout your tile's installation guide names. If the guide describes no grouted installation, the tile is not meant to be grouted.
The four vinyl grout systems compared
No single source puts these side by side. The table combines the tile makers' installation guides with the grout data sheets listed under sources. TEC makes setting materials, not tile, so its column has no tile-maker rules.
| Rule | Armstrong Alterna | Mannington Adura | Congoleum DuraCeramic | TEC Premixed Vinyl Tile Grout |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Required grout | S-693 FlexStrong premixed sanded acrylic only | Adura grout only ("Only Mannington acrylic grout") | DuraCeramic Premixed Grout (sanded acrylic) | The product itself: premixed sanded acrylic, "for use with vinyl tile only" |
| Prohibited | Traditional cement grouts | Cement-based, epoxy, furan | Cement, epoxy, other premix grouts | Not stated (not a tile maker) |
| Joint (spacer) width | 1/16 to 1/4 in | 1/16 to 1/4 in (guide); 1/16 to 3/16 in (current grout page) | 1/16 to 1/4 in | 1/8 to 1/4 in; not wider than 1/4 in |
| When to grout | Immediately or the following day | Immediately after installation | Immediately or within 24 hours | Joints clean and dry |
| Before grouting | Roll with a 100 lb roller right after setting tile | Re-roll with a three-section roller of 100 lb or heavier just before grouting | Re-roll just before grouting; remove adhesive smears with mineral spirits | Wipe the vinyl with a slightly damp sponge |
| Foot traffic | Off until grout is dry, at least 24 h (S-693: light traffic at 24 h) | After 24 h | Off for 24 h; normal traffic after 48 h | Light traffic after 24 h at 72°F; full cure 7 days |
| Heavy loads | No heavy rolling traffic for 72 h; S-693: furniture after at least 72 h | Not stated | Not stated beyond the 48 h figure | No water exposure for 7 days |
| Temperature | Room, subfloor, tile and adhesive 65 to 85°F for 48 h before, during and 48 h after; grout used at 65 to 90°F | Install at 65 to 85°F | 65 to 85°F for 48 h before, during and 48 h after; 55 to 100°F thereafter | Apply at 50 to 90°F |
| Sealing | Sealers not recommended | No sealing required | No sealer listed | No need to seal |
| Interior or wet use | Interior only; not for underwater areas | Interior only | Not for exterior, shower floors or underwater | Interior only; not for wet areas including showers |
The joint ranges agree except at the edges: TEC's grout is not rated for 1/16 inch joints, and for 1/4 inch on Adura, check with Mannington, because its grout page and installation guide disagree. Every system wants 24 hours before foot traffic and two to three days before heavy loads.
Why cement grout is ruled out
Congoleum says its premixed acrylic grout "is designed for high flexural strength and adhesion to the edge of the tile," which "provides durability to resist cracking from thermal dimensional changes and normal subfloor deflection," and that "traditional cement grouts are not recommended and will not perform properly." Mannington says its grout "has been developed to bond to Luxury vinyl tiles and is flexible and durable." Armstrong's S-693 data sheet lists flexibility that "minimizes cracking with slight movements in the floor."
So the stated case rests on two properties: bond to the vinyl edge, and enough flexibility to ride out the small movements of a vinyl floor. Cement grout is a rigid material (the flexible grout page explains how far polymer modification stretches that, and it is not far). None of the guides publishes test data on cement grout over vinyl, so that is as far as the evidence goes.
Epoxy is banned by Mannington and Congoleum without a stated reason. Congoleum's ban on "other premix grouts" means a general-purpose acrylic or urethane pail from the tile aisle is still wrong for DuraCeramic.
Are these products still sold?
In July 2022 AHF Products received bankruptcy court approval to buy certain assets of Armstrong Flooring, Inc. As of October 2026, armstrongflooring.com still lists Alterna engineered tile under an AHF, LLC copyright, and AHF's S-693 FlexStrong data sheet is marked "Current," updated July 15, 2026.
Mannington's current grout page names ADURA Flex and ADURA APEX Hexagon as the floors that "can be installed just like ceramic tile using ADURA Grout." Confirm your collection is on that list.
Congoleum's own website no longer has a DuraCeramic product page: the DuraCeramic addresses in its sitemap redirect to the home page. For an existing DuraCeramic floor, the rules are unchanged: use grout labeled for DuraCeramic.
Choosing the joint width
Groutable vinyl tile has rounded factory edges, and that changes the arithmetic. Armstrong says the finished Alterna joint will look about 1/16 inch wider than the actual spacing. Congoleum's table: a 1/16 inch spacer gives a 1/8 to 5/32 inch line, 1/8 inch gives 3/16 to 7/32, 3/16 gives 1/4 to 9/32, and 1/4 gives 5/16 to 11/32. Pick the spacer from the line you want to see, not the other way round.
Armstrong notes that "the tighter the spacing, the less visible the grout lines will be." A 1/16 inch spacer gives the tightest line (1/8 to 5/32 inch finished on DuraCeramic, in the range of a ceramic narrow joint) but rules out the TEC grout. Mannington and Congoleum both tell you to add the grout width to the tile size when laying out, so the layout lines account for the joints.
If you cut tiles and the cut edge ends up in the field rather than against a wall, Armstrong and Congoleum both describe rounding the cut edge with a heat gun and a steel hand roller so it matches the factory radius. A square cut edge next to a rounded one gives a visibly uneven joint.
Grouting technique that differs from ceramic
The method resembles grouting ceramic tile, with a few rules that the vinyl guides repeat:
- Roll first. All three tile makers roll the floor to seat the tiles; Mannington and Congoleum re-roll just before grouting.
- Work small areas. Mannington and Congoleum cap each pass at 20 sq ft on floors; Armstrong's S-693 sheet says 6 to 10 sq ft; TEC says 10 sq ft.
- Use a hard float. S-693 calls for a hard epoxy float, Mannington a hard-edge rubber float, Congoleum a hard green rubber epoxy float, warning that soft floats "tend to pull the grout out of the joint, leaving it shallow." (The Alterna floor section says soft rubber float; its own grout sheet says hard epoxy float.)
- Clean with little water. Use a firm square-edged sponge, wipe diagonally, and change rinse water often. TEC warns excess water can cause cracks or pinholes; see grout sponge technique.
- Remove haze after 24 hours. Mannington and Congoleum use 1/4 cup of household ammonia per gallon of water and a nylon pad; Armstrong uses its Once 'n Done cleaner. Armstrong and Congoleum forbid grout haze removers, and Mannington forbids chemical grout cleaners.
Premixed grout dries rather than sets, so cold or humid rooms slow it; if joints stay soft, see grout not curing. General grout haze removal advice applies only where the vinyl maker allows it.
Watch out: Armstrong forbids floor strippers on grouted Alterna because they "will degrade premixed acrylic grout," and TEC forbids acids, bleach and vinegar on its grout. Use a neutral cleaner (see grout cleaners by pH).
Where this answer stops applying
- Tiles not made for grout. Grouting is a feature of specific products, not of vinyl as a category. Congoleum's DuraPlank II "is always installed with no space between the joints." If your instructions do not describe a grouted method, butt the joints as designed; tiling without grout lines covers butt-jointed products.
- Wood-look vinyl plank. It is a different product from wood-look porcelain plank, which takes cement or urethane grout (see grout for wood-look tile). Congoleum's DuraPlank II, a wood-look vinyl plank, is never grouted.
- Floating floors. Every grouted system here is glued down: Armstrong with S-295, Mannington with MT-711, Congoleum with DS100. None of these guides describes grouting a floating click-lock plank floor.
- Embossed center lines. On DuraCeramic Options laid as full 16 x 16 inch tiles, the embossed center lines get no grout. Scored and separated into 8 inch tiles, the new joints must be grouted.
- Showers, exteriors and underwater use. TEC excludes wet areas including showers, Congoleum excludes shower floors, exterior and underwater use, and Armstrong and Mannington describe their grout as interior only. Showers need tile and shower grout rated for them.
- Suspended wood subfloors under Alterna. For a grouted installation, Armstrong requires a total subfloor and underlayment thickness of 1 inch, at least 18 inches of ventilated space below, and joists at 16 inch centers.
Buying the right grout and how much
For coverage, Armstrong and Congoleum print almost the same figures for 16 x 16 inch tile: about 325 sq ft per gallon at a 1/8 inch joint and 225 sq ft per gallon at 1/4 inch. TEC lists about 300 sq ft per half-gallon pail for 12 x 12 inch tile at 1/8 inch. The grout calculator gives a figure for your layout, but the data sheet is the final word, because the rounded vinyl edge changes the joint shape.
S-693 and TEC both say keep from freezing. The usual trade-offs in premixed vs powder grout do not apply here: on groutable vinyl the choice is made for you.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use regular grout on vinyl tile?
No. Armstrong, Mannington and Congoleum all prohibit cement grout on their groutable vinyl and require their own premixed acrylic grout.
Can I use epoxy or urethane grout on LVT?
No. Mannington and Congoleum ban epoxy, Congoleum bans other premix grouts, and Armstrong allows only S-693.
What size grout line for groutable vinyl tile?
Spacers of 1/16 to 1/4 inch. The visible line ends up about 1/16 inch wider because grout covers the rounded tile edge.
How soon can you grout vinyl tile after laying it?
Immediately or within 24 hours, after rolling the floor with a 100 lb roller.
How long before walking on grouted vinyl tile?
About 24 hours for light foot traffic. Congoleum allows normal traffic after 48 hours, and Armstrong asks for 72 hours before heavy rolling loads or furniture.
Do you need to seal vinyl tile grout?
No. Mannington and TEC say their grouts need no sealing, and Armstrong says grout sealers are not recommended for S-693.
