Grout color decides whether a tiled surface reads as one calm field or a graphic grid. The visualizer shows your tile and grout colors in a real layout and measures the contrast between them, so you can see how strongly the joints will stand out before you buy.

How to read the contrast rating

The visualizer computes the luminance contrast ratio between tile and grout, the same measure used for text accessibility. It ignores hue and looks only at lightness, which is what the eye mostly uses to pick out a grid from a distance.

Screen color versus real grout

Screens cannot match real grout color exactly, and grout itself varies: cement grout cures lighter than it looks wet, and the same color can dry lighter or darker depending on mixing water and tile absorption (explained in why grout color varies). Use the visualizer to choose a direction (blended, soft or graphic), then make a sample board with the actual tile and two or three candidate grouts, and let it cure fully before deciding.

Pro tip: mid-tone grouts (light gray, pewter, sand) hide soil better than pure white or deep black on floors. Pure white shows dirt; very dark grout shows efflorescence and cleaner residue.

Frequently asked questions

Should grout match the tile or contrast with it?

Match (or go one shade darker) when you want the tile to read as a single surface or the tile is irregular. Contrast when the layout pattern is the point and the installation is precise. The grout color guide covers this in depth.

Does joint width change how strong the contrast looks?

Yes. The same color pair looks far bolder with 1/4 inch joints than with 1/16 inch joints, and much bolder with mosaics than with large format tile, because there is more grout on the surface.

Can I change grout color later?

Cement grout can be recolored with a grout colorant (an epoxy-based or acrylic coating made for joints), within limits. See grout colorant.

Grout Atlas guidance is checked against ANSI A108/A118 and ISO 13007 requirements, the TCNA Handbook and manufacturer technical data sheets. Product formulations change, so confirm details on the current data sheet for the product you buy. Spotted an error? Report a correction.
